Sutherlandia

Sutherlandia frutescens
South African Cancer Bush

.

Composition of Sutherlandia

Common names: sutherlandia, cancer bush, balloon pea (Eng.); umnwele(Xhosa & Zulu); kankerbos, blaasbossie, blaas-ertjie, eendjies, gansiekeurtjie, klappers, hoenderbelletjie (Afr.)
Sutherlandia frutescens, is a much-respected and long-used medicinal plant that is also an attractive garden plant, and has been cultivated in gardens for many years, for its fine form, striking colour and luminous flowers.
According to experts, this ability means that the plant should be classified as an adaptogen – that is, a herb or other substance that increases the body’s ability to resist stress, whether internal or environmental, and that strengthens the immune and nervous systems.
While traditional healers have a healthy respect for Sutherlandia frutescens, to date there is no definite scientific data to back up their faith in the plant. However, preliminary clinical results look promising.

Health benefits of Sutherlandia

Cancer
The name cancer bush, kankerbos, comes from its reputation as a cure for cancer.
Various studies have shown that Sutherlandia helps the body to cope with mental and physical stresses by strengthening its own resources.  There is preliminary clinical evidence that Sutherlandia has a direct anticancer effect in some cancers, and also acts as an immune stimulant, but Sutherlandia should not be recommended as a so-called “universal cancer cure”, but rather as a quality-of-life tonic.

Various studies have shown that Sutherlandia helps the body to cope with mental and physical stresses by strengthening its own resources.  Sutherlandia decreases anxiety and irritability and it elevates mood. The Sutherlandia frutescens plant from Southern Africa  was traditionally used by the Zulus to ‘put the heart back’ into widows of slain Zulu warriors and to ‘take the war out’ of returning warriors who had survived. Sutherlandia is used a lot for post bereavement.  There is no interaction with other medicines and Suthelandia can even be taken alongside conventional anti-depressants, although not necessarily the same time of the day. You can stop taking Sutherlandia at any time without fear of withdrawal symptoms. Traditional uses for the miracle plant include the treatment of depression and anxiety, asthma and bronchitis, kidney infections, moderate hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic fatigue syndrome.

History of Sutherlandia
The humble Sutherlandia frutescens is a small shrubby plant that’s popular in South African gardens because it’s hardy, attractive, and brings sunbirds to pollinate its red flowers – but traditional healers, among them the renowned 82-year-old sangoma Credo Mutwa, have long used it to treat a range of ailments.
Sutherlandia has come into the limelight recently because its intake was thought to benefit patients suffering from HIV Aids.
