Lobelia

Lobelia inflata
also known as Indian tobacco

Composition of Lobelia

Because of its dainty flowers, lobelia plants are usually planted in the garden or window boxes to visually improve people’s surroundings. However, because of its beauty, its nutritional components are typically overlooked. Lobelia  helps clear mucus from the respiratory tract, including the throat, lungs, and bronchial tubes. Although few studies have evaluated the safety and effectiveness of lobelia, some herbalists today

use lobelia as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for asthma.

Health benefits of Lobelia

Lungs
The primary active constituent in lobelia, responsible for its beneficial characteristics, is an alkaloid known as lobeline. Lobeline is an expectorant, diaphoretic, and bronchodilator that is able to support the respiratory system in a multidimensional way. As an expectorant, lobeline helps break down congestion and thin mucus. That, combined with its bronchodilating effects, helps to open the airway and encourage deeper, stronger breathing.

History of Lobelia

Lobelia, or Indian tobacco, is a flowering herb that is named after the Belgian botanist, Matthias de l’Obel. Lobelia has a long history of use as an herbal remedy for respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and cough. Historically, Native Americans smoked lobelia as a treatment for asthma. In the 19th century, American physicians prescribed lobelia to induce vomiting in order remove toxins from the body. Because of this, it earned the name “puke weed.”
